Wages - Starting at $20.04 - $24.77per hour plus $.25 per hour for each certification
Essential Job Functions
- Responsible for diagnosing, repairs, rebuilds and makes necessary adjustments to all types of engine operated vehicles and equipment.
- Responsible for performing preventative maintenance inspections and needed corrections
- Responsible for the State Police annual school bus inspection
- Responsible for performing road testing to determine service needs
- Responsible for filling out reports for all work that is completed
- Responsible for maintaining stock of repair parts, or purchasing new when needed
- Responsible for picking up from and delivers vehicles to vendor repair sources
- Responsible for meeting with vendor supply sources and recommends new or replacement equipment, parts and materials
- Responsible for evaluating the district’s fleets relative to individual or overall operational costs and replacement needs
- Responsible for attending seminars, in-service training and classroom instruction
- Responsible for assisting with maintenance needs in the buildings and on the grounds of the district
- Responsible for cleaning and maintaining garage area and work space
- Responsible for snow plowing and salting parking lots
- Responsible for the care, maintenance equipment and vehicles
- Responsible for maintaining stock of repair parts, or purchasing new when needed
- Responsible for assisting vendors, inspectors and contractors
- Responsible to write, edit and complete online work orders Responsible to guard property against fire, floods, theft and illegal entry
- Responsible to be aware of and follow MIOSHA Safety and Health Standards at all times while performing the duties of this position
- Responsible to perform other such duties as may be assigned by administration. Responsible to coordinate work with building personnel and the Director of Facilities and Transportation, so that repair projects do not interfere with district operations
- Responsible to guard property against fire, floods, theft and illegal entry
- Responsible for related duties as assigned
Requirements
- High School Graduate. College or trade school classes preferred.
- Hold a valid Michigan State Master Certification in all six areas of heavy duty truck repair, certified driver’s license less passenger endorsement.
- Able to read and interpret vehicle drawings and electrical schematics. Ability to problem solve faulty vehicle systems
- Free from adverse effects of medication, alcohol and drugs
- Use respectable language at all times
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Type B or higher
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a type P “passenger”, type S “school bus” and air brake endorsements
- Must be able to meet the criteria and pass the physical examination per Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (49 CFR
- 41-391.49), and comply with WWPS Bus Driver Physical Requirements
- Must be able to pass Michigan School Bus Driver Education Course
- Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in handling and maneuvering a school bus
- Submit to random drug and alcohol testing
- The employee must be able to sit for up to eight (8) hours in a plow truck. In addition, these tasks will require the employee to continuously turn their neck to look in all directions.
- The employee must have good organizational skills and be able to independently sort, prioritize and complete work orders with minimal supervision.
- Ability or willingness to learn to operate large equipment such as forklifts, backhoes, tractors and scissor lifts
- Must have ability or willingness to learn computer skills for completing online work orders.
- Be able to speak, read and write at a level of proficiency that permits satisfactory job performance
- Be able to read and follow Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and cleaning chemical labels
- Be neat in appearance
- Must make every effort to be available for emergency and overtime assignments with proper notice
- Must be willing to attend seminars and in-service training
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community

The Mechanic works within the District most of the time. The job requires some physical exertion; individuals in this position may be on their feet throughout the workday. In addition, the person may need to ascend/descend a ladder to analyze a facility or piece of equipment and may need to occasionally push or lift equipment. The employee will need specific vision abilities to analyze facility needs. The employee may be required to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff. The employee is directly responsible for maintaining District property and equipment. The Mechanic is also directly responsible to correct safety issues within his/her job functions and report same to the Director.
